**Update Regarding Omar and Followup Surgery**
Omar returned to New York for on June 3, 2020 to have an embolization procedure to reduce the excessive blood flow into his right eye. This was a delicate procedure because it involved the eyelid and eye. The procedure went very well and after the area has time to recover, he will have plastic surgery to give his skin a more normal texture and to hopefully salvage the use of his eyelid.
Getting Omar to New York was difficult because the airport in Guatemala City has been closed for 3 months due to the virus. The only flights leaving Guatemala are flights to evacuate US Citizens. We were able to get him on one of those flights because he has a medical visa and had proof of an appointment at Mount Sinai Hospital. Omar may have to stay in New York longer than expected due to the airport being closed. We will continue to provide updates as they occur. Thank you for your help in changing Omar's life!

Ongoing Donations Needed for Treatment of Arteriovenous Malformation for Omar

Omar Patzan is an 18 year old from Guatemala, his family is indigenous and has very little money and no resources to help their son. Omar suffers from a high-flow arteriovenous malformation of the right orbit. He was taken to the largest medical facility in Guatemala where he was examined and a digital cerebral angiography was performed. The doctors at Centro Medico in Guatemala said they do not have the resources to treat Omar and said he needs to be treated in the United States.
The treatment for Omar began on December 16, 2019 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, when the plastic surgeon put in tissue expanders to stretch enough skin on his head to be able to reconstruct the right forehead area. Omar returned to Guatemala for two months after the procedure and returned to New York and had the embolization procedure on March 4, 2020 and the plastic surgery on March 5, 2020.
The embolization and plastic surgery went very well. As you will see from the photos below, the embolization was successful in blocking the oversized vessels, which had been delivering too much blood to the lesions in Omar's forehead and right eyelid. The day after the embolization, the plastic surgeon used the excess skin that was provided by using the tissue expanders. Omar will look much better and the surgeon has hopes that he will have a functioning right eyelid. We will know in time
We would like to thank everyone that has donated to help us get Omar the treatment he needs, not only to save his life, but to give him a quality of life. We will need your financial support to maintain this treatment. This will allow Omar to be able to get back in school and obtain a job. Please consider donating to help us with this endeavor as we will need approximately $10,000 for the ongoing treatments.
