Future Girl's Group
Nueva Generación is partnering with Small Change for Big Change, a 501(c)(3) organization, along with a Peace Corp volunteer to teach young Guatemalan girls about nutrition, mental and physical health, business, public speaking, etc. All of these endeavors are designed to develop well-rounded, successful, caring women.

Future Girl's Group - Gender Roles
Today we discussed gender roles in the Guatemalan culture. We learned how these girls view their roles based on gender. It was very interesting to see how they view themselves in the Guatemalan culture.
Future Girl's Group - Mental Health
Today we had a beautiful Future Girls Group about mental health, thank you so much to our guest teacher Virginia, a local woman graduated in art, about to graduate in psychology, with plans to work in art therapy! Mental health is not a topic that is really discussed here in our community very much. For example, if someone expresses that they are depressed, they could be bullied, shamed, told they are pretending, or their parents may just hit them with the intent of snapping them out of it. So we definitely need more education and openness on the subject. The Future Girls Group did some art therapy, stretching and meditation, talked about what might affect their mental health and some practical ways to stay mentally healthy, like diet, exercise, getting out of the house for a distraction, being with loved ones, communicating, setting intentional goals, or seeking out help. They know we are a safe space here as well as a resource if or when they need support on this topic or for anything else.
Future Girl's Group - Career Field Trip
Today we took advantage of everyone being on summer break, so we took the Future Girls Group to the nearby town of San Juan del Obispo, where two families decided to work in tourism and opened the Nispero (loquat fruit) Museum, and the Chocolate Museum. Not only is it good for the girls to visit new places and see how other people have invented new careers and support small businesses, but it’s also fun to get out of town and get to know each other better. The girls loved sampling Nispero wine and a variety of flavors of chocolate of course! We were hosted by a 19-year old Indigenous girl who studied tourism; we couldn’t ask for a better example for our Future Girls Group! All of these girls are on scholarships, either with Small Change 4 Big Change or with Nueva Generación.
Future Girl's Group - Self- Confidence
Awesome class with the Future Girls Group! Thank you Ilse Caballeros for teaching about self-confidence! The girls had a good discussion and did trust falls with each other and since most have a fear of public speaking, they took turns speaking into the microphone in front of the group; to help face the fear and to also become more of a united group where they know each other and can offer and have access to support.
This is an amazing group of young women, they are an absolute potential powerhouse for our community!

Future Girl's Group - Self-Esteem
The Future Girls Group is working on self esteem; here they are making spiderweb qualities that they appreciate in themselves, and choosing other qualities they would like to develop.
Future Girl's Group - Values
On today's class for the Future Girls Group, they worked on their Identitrees (identity trees- the roots of where we come from; the trunk is our values and the branches are goals and successes). The girls wanted to know about nutrition, so we also talked about the super plant Moringa, and each girl took home a Moringa tree (to continue our tree theme) that they can plant and harvest at home as a nutritional supplement.
Future Girl's Group - Nutrition
Our Future Girls Group has been busy studying nutrition and preparing healthy meals, doing crafts and having singing lessons! These girls are all so busy during the school year, so it’s nice for them to enjoy their summer break trying new things. They will have some English and yoga classes coming up in December as well.
The healthy meal they prepared on Saturday was a fruit and greens salad, a taco bowl with veggies, a detox smoothie and a fudge cake - all vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free!
