SPECIAL PROJECTS
Unacceptable Living Conditions
Nueva Generación believes no family should live in deplorable conditions like you will see in the slideshow below.
SPECIAL PROJECT - HOUSE BUILDING
Nueva Generación and their awesome volunteers have built homes to lift families out of housing conditions that nobody should live in. Your donations have enabled us to build these homes. The need is an ongoing need, so if you would like to donate to help build a home, please go to the Donate page. You can designate the money for home building on the donate form. All donations are tax deductible and are greatly appreciated!
Special Project - Medical Care
Most indigenous people in the rural areas of Guatemala do not receive medical care because health inequalities disproportionately affect indigenous people in Guatemala. Studies have noted that the disadvantageous situation of indigenous people is the result of complex and structural elements such as social exclusion, racism and discrimination.
Nueva Generación has provided medical care to some of the indigenous people of Guatemala through the efforts of our own Dr. Joel Schneider, husband of our Director Cindy Schneider, and some of his colleagues. We also visited a medical clinic in Tecapán Guatemala, called Fundación Educa Pueblo Viejo. We met with doctors and interns there to see how they are changing the lives of their patients and how we can possibly work with them in the future.

Special Project - Ventilated Stoves
Families in this village, and others like it, cook their food in a hole in the ground in their home over an open flame made with firewood placed in the hole. This requires a lot of firewood and is a major expense for the families. Also, the smoke from the fire is a dangerous contaminant. Estufas Chispas in Guatemala, makes stoves designed for Guatemalan cuisine. Each stove offsets 9 tons of CO2 a year due to using about 55% less firewood. The money saved from not buying as much firewood will provide food for the family. Also, these stoves remove all of the smoke and contaminants from the home. Below is a slideshow of how families cook in their homes and of the type of stove we purchased for 16 families. One of our volunteers, Claudia Gunter, raised enough money to purchase 14 stoves.
There is an ongoing need for stoves, so if you would like to donate to help purchase a stove, please go to the Donate page. Each stove cost $175, but feel free to donate any amount. You can designate the money for stoves on the donate form. All donations are tax deductible and are greatly appreciated!

Special Project - Prosthesis and Cataract Removal for Mynor
When Mynor was 9 years old, while flying a kite with friends in the streets of San Antonio Aguas Calientes Guatemala, his kite became stuck in a tree. He climbed the tree to retrieve it and was shocked by high voltage electrical lines intertwined in the branches, which nearly killed him. He was rushed for emergency treatment which resulted in the amputation of both of his legs below the knee, and his left arm. After surviving this trauma, he was brought to the US by a non-profit organization to receive care from Shriners Hospital. He received bilateral lower extremity prosthetics and returned to Guatemala to live with his family in their village. After receiving his prosthetics, Mynor lived the typical life of a child in his village. Fifteen years later, we found him bedridden because his prosthetics no longer fit. Also, as a result of the electrical shock that he sustained, Mynor now needed cataract removal surgery. Through your generous donations, Mynor now has prosthetics that fit and he has had successful cataract removal surgery.
Special Project - Cleft Palate Surgery for Deysi
Deysi Aleydi was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate. Unfortunately, these are common deformities among newborn babies born in Guatemala. As an infant, she received her initial surgery at the Public Hospital with a team of international medical volunteers. With the closure of her palate, she was able to obtain nutrition and survived. However, she did not receive the follow-up care and necessary surgeries so that she could speak clearly. Her palate required another surgery that was not done. Her teeth are scattered throughout the roof of her mouth and her lip required reconstruction surgery. Because of these deformities, she was unable to pass her grades in school. The teachers continually failed her because they could not understand her. Speech therapy was not successful. She was a target of bullying and taunting among her neighborhood peers.
Once again, through your generous donations, Deysi has had the proper orthodontic care and successful surgery to repair her severe cleft palate. We are happy to report that Deysi is back in school, making good grades and just as important, she is now socially active with her peers!

Special Project - Chicken Coops
For the poor, having enough food and especially enough protein is always a challenge. Nueva Generación raised money to purchase chicken coops, a rooster and hen for a few families that were in desperate need of food. The chicken coops are providing them with eggs that will provide the protein that is usually deficient in their diet. The families can also sell some of the excess eggs to provide an income for their family.
Special Project - Water Filters
Having clean, drinkable water is always a problem for the poor in third world countries. With the help of one of the volunteers of Nueva Generación, Frank Liccardo, we were able to provide water filters made by Eco Filtro in Guatemala, to 65 families solving the problem of not having clean water to drink. When children are growing and developing, they need all of the nutrients they can get from their diet. However, when they drink unfiltered water, the parasites in the water will consume a lot of those nutrients causing the child to not develop to their full potential.
Special Project - Children's Activities
Nueva Generación understands that projects such as building homes, providing medical care, clean water, stoves, education, etc. are extremely important, but equally important is spending time with the children to provide them the encouragement they need to feel they are important, helping them gain confidence, showing them that there are people that care about them. Our volunteers have taught them English, played games with them, taught them how to make necklaces and simply spent time engaging them in conversation.
Special Project - Backpacks, Shoes and Toothbrushes
Every year, one of our great volunteers, David Glickman, brings backpacks, shoes, clothes, etc. for the children which are generously donated by Congregation Kol Ami in West Hollywood, California. Items like these are taken for granted in the United States, but for the poor in Guatemala they are a treasure!
Nueva Generación would like to recognize and thank Dr. Cheryl Siegel for providing us with a yearly supply of toothbrushes and toothpaste for our scholarship students. You can visit Dr. Siegel's website:

Special Project - Mattresses
For the poor in Guatemala, having the luxury of sleeping on a mattress is something that only a few have. Many families fit as many as they can on one mattress. Some families do not even have one mattress. Nueva Generación provided 14 families with a new mattress to help alleviate this problem.
Special Project - Lanterns for Light
In many homes of our students, there is no electricity and therefore no light to study by. Mr. Beams is a LED lighting technology company that makes wireless lights and lanterns. When we spoke to Jamie Shearer at Mr. Beams about our students needing lighting to study by, she quickly offered Nueva Generación 30 Ultrabright LED lanterns at no charge! These were given to the families that do not have electricity and that have students in our scholarship program.
Nueva Generación would like to offer a special thank you to Jamie and Mr. Beams! Mr. Beams featured this project on their website. Click here to read the article.
